TIMELINE
Organized by the newspaper Diário de Notícias, the first Tour of Portugal was born as an extreme adventure. Riders faced unpaved roads, heavy bicycles, and endless stages with almost no technical support.
During the Estado Novo dictatorship, the Tour of Portugal became one of the country's greatest popular spectacles. The race was subject to strong media control and was used as a symbol of national pride, at a time when cycling attracted huge crowds across the country.
With the rise of television, the Tour of Portugal became a major mass-media event. The roads filled with caravans, and thousands of spectators followed the peloton across the country. For a few days, Portugal seemed to move at the pace of the race.
